Matt Adams delivers with a walk-off HR in the 16th inning

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams doesn’t shy away from the spotlight.

Entering the late stages of Friday, the Cardinals found themselves down 3-2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the bottom of the 9th inning. A clutch HR from Cardinals shortstop Jedd Gyorko tied the game at 3 a piece, and this game went to extra innings.

After 5+ scoreless innings, it seemed like this game would never end. Up until his at-bat in the 16th, Adams had no hits (0-5) and had a single strikeout. The situation didn’t look great for the 27-year-old slugger, but he ended up delivering in the greatest matter.

With no one on and a single out, Adams blasted a solo HR in dramatic fashion to walk-off his Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Dodgers.

Adams finished the game going 1-6, with one HR, a walk, an RBI, a run, and a single strikeout. It was Adams’ 2nd walk-off HR of his career, and it must have been his sweetest one as this game lasted 5 hours and 10 minutes.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to a 52-44 record on the season. They are currently 2nd in the NL Central behind the surging Chicago Cubs (58-37).

It’ll be interesting to see if the Cardinals can hold off the Pirates for that 2nd spot, as the Pirates are only 3 games behind the 2nd placed squad.

For the Dodgers, they fall to a 54-44 record making them 4.0 games back of the 1st place San Francisco Giants. They were up in this game, but they just couldn’t close it out when they needed to.

Both teams will battle it out again Saturday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis at 7:15 p.m. EST.
